Hundreds of millions of years ago, the geologic stage was being set to receive rich mineralization, which later drew prospectors and miners, who fended off outlaws and Indians and weathered an impossible climate to wrest metals from the ground. Camps and towns, roads and rails, a territory, and finally a state grew up to support the miners, who first chased gold and silver, and who later provided raw materials to fuel the United States’ Industrial Revolution. Mining and minerals, above all else, have shaped the spirit and character of Arizona, which was granted statehood on February 14, 1912.
Arizona’s mining history is preserved in rich collections of stories, mineral specimens, and mining artifacts, all of which link us to our geohistory. Our mineral and mining heritage is curated traditionally by a host of international institutions and increasingly by private collectors. These storied specimens, collections, and conservators reflect a courage and perseverance akin to that of the pioneer-miners who still brave the elements and the odds to work Arizona’s modern ore and specimen deposits.
This calendar of Arizona Minerals is part of a community-wide Centennial tribute to Arizona’s minerals and mines and to their champions. It is a companion to Lithographie’s upcoming book "Collecting Arizona" and to the 2012 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show exhibit "Arizona Mineral Treasures."
