The standard reference on all currently accepted mineral species. Over 4,000 species are listed alphabetically, with formula, crystal system, type locality. Comparative relationships with other species, groups and series are noted, along with the best references to be found for each species in over 200 scientific journals and technical sources. All of this is contained in a convenient handbook size, with wire-O binding so that it lies flat when open. This is the ninth edition of a work originated in 1971 by Michael Fleischer (1908-1998) of the U.S. Geological Survey. Fleischer began writing abstracts of new mineral species for the American Mineralogist in 1941, and served as the first chairman of the Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names of the International Mineralogical Association. Production of new editions of the Glossary was taken over by Joseph A. Mandarino, who also served as the (third) chairman of IMA Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names (from 1983-1995). This latest edition is the work of Mandarino and his associate, Malcolm Back.
